In Europe, Toyota positioned the Auris as the replacement of Corolla hatchback, while the notchback Sedan continued with the Corolla nameplate. It is not sold in North America and the Latin America, as the larger Toyota Matrix takes its place in the lineup. The Auris succeeds the Corolla RunX in Japan and the Toyota RunX (no Corolla badging) in South Africa. Toyota Australia and Toyota New Zealand resisted suggestions from Toyota Japan to adopt the new European Auris name for the Corolla.[1] The name "Auris" is based on the Latin word for "gold", aurum. It replaces the Toyota Corolla hatchback. It will be equipped with engines produced at TMUK's Deeside Plant and be produced at TMUK's Burnaston Plant.[11][12] [edit] Auris HSD Full Hybrid (2010–) The 2011 Toyota Auris Hybrid is the first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle built in Europe.[13] The Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept was unveiled in 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.[14] The concept version included Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, 18-inch alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tyres, a larger, more efficient rear spoiler, 20 mm lower ride height, seats and upper dashboard with blue Gaucholino leather upholstery, instrument cluster with hybrid blue illumination, solar panel roof with ventilation. The production version of the Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive was presented in the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.[15] Mass production began in May 2010 at Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK) Burnaston plant and became the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle to be built in Europe.[13] Sales in the U.K. began on July 1, 2010, at a price starting at GB£18,950 (US$27,450), GB£550 (US$800) less than the Toyota Prius.[16][17] The 2011 Auris Hybrid shares the same powertrain as the Prius, and also features a 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine and Lithium-Ion batteries.[18] Combined fuel economy is 74.3 mpg-imp (3.80 L/100 km; 61.9 mpg-US).[16][19][20] Carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) are 89 g/km on the standard U.K. test cycle which allows the model to be exempted from paying Vehicle Excise Duty and the London congestion charge.[20] On July 2010, the Auris hybrid was selected as "WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2010" by What Car? magazine.[20] [edit] Japan (2006–) Introduced as the new model, the Auris is the successor of Corolla Runx. Trim levels are 150X and 180G. For model year 2007 on Japanese models only, G-BOOK, a subscription telematics service, is offered as an option. It replaced the Toyota Allex, which, in turn, was the replacement for the Toyota Sprinter. It has different front and rear sheetmetal, and is powered by Toyota's 2.4 litre 2AZ-FE engine. Recently Toyota released the Blade Master and Blade Master G, an upgraded trim of the Blade which features Toyota's 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp) 3.5 L 2GR-FE V6 engine, larger brakes, and an upgraded suspension. [edit] Australia [edit] (2007–2009) In Australia, the Auris is sold as "Corolla" hatchback with "Seca" emblem on the hatch door above the licence plate. Grades are: base-model "Ascent", mid-spec "Conquest", sports "Levin SX" and sports luxury "Levin ZR". All models are powered by the 1.8 Litre 2ZR-FE engine. All, but the Ascent come with standard alloy wheels and fog lights. The Levin models have sports style body kits. Electric moonroof is only available as an option on Levin ZR. As of January 2009, ESC has been made available as standard on Conquest and Levin ZR - Ascent and Levin SX have ESC as an option. [edit] (2009–) 2009–2010 Toyota Corolla (ZRE152R MY10) Ascent (Australia) Australian Corolla Hatchback received a facelift during the fourth quarter of 2009 and sold under MY10. The entire body design has been given a sporty makeover. Major changes were made to the front and rear fascia, wheel designs and interior trims. The "Seca" branding has been removed from the hatch door, taillights design has been changed. A newer bumper design has also been adapted with a special "diffuser" fitted at the bottom to give the rear a sportier look and on either side of the diffuser are reflectors which were lacking in any other previous Corolla Hatchback models. The front receives new grille and revised headlamps. Fog lights have been removed from the Conquest model. Ascent continues to receive 15 inch steel wheels while the rest receive 16 inch alloys with Conquest and Levin SX sharing the same alloys. Side mirrors now feature indicators. The trim materials have also been changed along with a new D-shaped sports steering wheel available on Conquest and Levin models. Other changes have also been made to equipment and technology. Our Auris features the 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine - and it's certainly neither quiet nor refined, especially when started up first thing in the morningOur new Auris has only recently arrived on the Auto Express fleet, but I already have an uncanny feeling of déjà vu. Having looked after a Toyota Corolla Verso for a year, I can see much of that model in this hatchback - but not in a good way. When I look at how Honda reinvented the Civic, I can't help wondering why Toyota didn't start from scratch and take the opportunity to change people's perceptions of the Corolla badge. Come to think of it, I also wish the engineers had spent a bit more time working on the sound insulation. Our Auris features the 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine - and it's certainly neither quiet nor refined, especially when started up first thing in the morning. I've been driving a Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi for the last 12 months, and the Japanese hatchback is much louder than the Korean SUV, although the Auris does improve a little as the engine warms up. Otherwise, it makes easy work of my daily drive through London. The steering is light and accurate, and the Toyota feels stable and nippy. One thing I am missing, though, is the practicality and versatility of both the Sportage and the Corolla Verso. Even when compared with other hatchbacks, the Auris seems small - rear space is cramped and the boot modest.I also have trouble with the new cabin design. I'm six feet tall, and my leg bangs against the raised centre console, which is irritating. That's not the only ergonomic flaw I've found, either. The storage cubby underneath the seat is totally inaccessible, the electric window switches aren't illuminated in the dark, so it's trial and error after the sun goes down, and the handbrake is awkward to use.So while I loved the Corolla Verso, I haven't formed such an immediate bond with the Auris. The early signs are that Toyota's recycling scheme hasn't paid off. Safety: positioned prominently on the console, the warning lights for the seatbelts and airbags are a useful feature. Engine: the 2.0 D-4D diesel is rather noisy. Still, it hasn’t covered many miles yet, and should loosen up over the months. Styling: too much of the dull old Corolla has been carried over. The Auris has the corporate nose, yet overall it’s a poor effort. Heating controls: they’re logical to use and clearly laid out, but do they have to feel so cheap? A metal outer ring would have added a touch of quality. Handbrake: not only does its position limit stowage, but the button is awkward to pull back, especially for female drivers who have long fingernails.
