6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests Toyota Avensis 2.2 D-4D T-Spirit It’s well built and equipped, but does it have enough in way of flair? January 2009 It's the world’s biggest motor maker, but Toyota’s line-up lacks one vital ingredient: flair. Even though the firm is famed for reliability, all of its cars appeal to the head more than the heart. Any hope of a victory in this test will hinge upon adding some character to the mix.First impressions aren’t promising. It’s hard to get too fired up about the new family model from the outside – even in sleek Tourer guise. It’s more modern than its predecessor, but the Avensis still isn’t a car to lust after. Its bland looks are instantly forgettable next to the aggressive Accord. You can level the same criticism at the interior. The neat dashboard doesn’t feature the confusing array of buttons that clutters the Accord cabin, but there’s little to get excited about. Build quality is predictably solid, though, and standard kit in top-spec T-Spirit trim is generous. The Toyota comes with a huge panoramic sunroof, seven airbags and xenon lights all as standard. However, the driver’s seat could do with being lower for the perfect position. We’ve no complaints about the space on offer. Adults sitting in the middle of the rear bench will struggle for headroom, although it matches the Accord for rear leg space and has a more practical boot. With the back seats in place its load area is shorter than the Honda’s, but it’s 200mm wider and provides 543 litres of luggage space – the Accord has only 406 litres. Fold the rear seats flat and it can swallow loads up to 1,940mm long. Thanks to keyless entry, starting the 2.2-litre diesel is simply a matter of pressing a button, although the electronic parking brake is fussy. It’s hidden behind the steering wheel and is counter intuitive, as you push it to apply the brake and pull it to release. On the move, the Toyota’s 148bhp oil- burner has been tuned to deliver economy rather than performance – and it shows. At the test track, 0-60mph took 9.2 seconds, but you don’t get the mid-range punch usually associated with a torquey diesel. Nevertheless, our biggest complaint is reserved for the suspension, which struggles to cope with small surface imperfections. This is most evident at lower speeds, as even small bumps filter through to the cabin over poor surfaces, and potholes send a crash through the interior. On the motorway the compromised ride is less obvious, although the Avensis could still be more refined. Taller gearing ensures the engine is more relaxed than the Honda’s at 70mph, but the Toyota generates more wind noise. The Avensis fails to deliver any surprises and appeals on a logical level rather than an emotional one. Fuel economy of 35.7mpg is better than the Honda’s, while lower CO2 emissions will benefit company drivers – we just wish it had a personality. What it will cost youWhen it comes to choice, the Toyota outshines its rival, because the Avensis is available with two diesel engines, and the larger 2.2-litre unit comes in two outputs. An automatic box will also join the oil-burner line-up late in the spring. Fuel economy of 35.7mpg is predictably impressive, and it helps to make the Japanese newcomer a wallet-friendly option. Better still, business users will benefit from its lower CO2 emissions and list price with a smaller tax liability – especially for higher-rate payers. Flagship T-Spirit trim includes xenon headlamps and a panoramic roof, but it lacks the Honda’s standard-fit sat-nav.In detail* Engine: 2.2-litre 4cyl, 148bhp* 0-60mph: 9.2 seconds* Economy: 35.7mpg* Annual road tax: £145* Euro NCAP rating: N/A BACK TO TOP What Next COMPARE CAR LOANS COMPARE CAR INSURANCE For more breaking car news and reviews, subscribe to Auto Express magazine. Previous Avensis was lacklustre, but new model aims to add desirability to package. AT A GLANCE: There’s nothing to dislike about the Avensis Tourer. (I know I don’t get out much. I spend too much time driving a keyboard.) I’ve learned how to use the ‘TNS 200 GPS Navigation system with electronic traffic avoidance’ (no instructions in the car: apparently a common omission). And I can tell you it’s far from brilliant at traffic avoidance. On a particularly horrific return from Stansted to Weybridge, the M25 was blocked by multiple accidents, which the satnav kindly informed me of. But when I chose to deviate by the A41-Chesham-Amersham-Beaconsfield-Slough-Windsor-Staines-Chertsey route, it kept trying to send me back to the M25 which it cheerfully told me was still blocked. So it’s best used to find an unfamiliar destination rather than to take you around a jam. In spite of this, miles per gallon has improved considerably: up to 44.53 on that particular tankful, which has lifted the average to 41.53. The car remains the same amiable old friend to drive. Good company but never likely to get into an arm wrestling match with a Porsche. There’s the usual torqueless turbodiesel flat-spot under 1,000 rpm which means driving in 3rd or 4th in 30 and 40 limits. But out on the road, if you pick your ratios properly, you can get the car to shift a bit. And, though the steering is an inconsistent mix of good feel at times yet overlight and feel-free at others, the front can be made to grip tenaciously. However, you know the back will never, ever let go or even assist you to tighten your line whatever you try to do. And there was a rattle from the back. Eventually I traced the culprit to the scissor jack wobbling around in its cradle. So I tightened it up only to find that the cradle is so flimsy it bent and the jack fell out. So I bent the cradle back with my fingers, wrapped a pair of old socks around the jack and screwed it back in place. Hardly 21st Century, though. I think Toyota is going to have to re-think and spend 5p on a slightly better jack cradle. Or some foam rubber between the jack and the boot floor. I know the new Avensis is a big car. But I hadn’t realised how much bigger it is than the old Avensis until I parked it next to one. See for yourself in the photo. It makes the old model look like a kiddie car. I’ve mentioned the sound system before. It has a standard eight-speaker radio/cassette/single CD player and Nora Jones comes over almost as well on it as she did in my Leon. But even though Nora’s good, you get sick of the same old songs and since Christina Aguillera isn’t exactly Avensis appropriate I’ve wound up listening to Radio 2, which could be fitted as standard. I’ll recap from previous reports that the driving position is fully adjustable with electric lumbar support and is very comfortable for a wide range of sizes of people. It has a huge boot. There is also bags of space in the back seat for two but, though piggy in the middle gets a proper three-point seatbelt, he sits higher than the other two and doesn’t have much headroom. Actually, this could be a plus point because it gives a child a better vantage point to see what’s going on outside the car, thus making the child less likely to projectile vomit down the back of your neck. The top T-Spirit version is loaded with goodies, as it should be at a list price of £19,500. You get leather seats; cruise control; and the ‘TNS 200 GPS Navigation system with electronic traffic avoidance’, which tells you about traffic on your route, but doesn’t avoid it. It has a brilliant double cubby front armrest which should be compulsory on all cars. I don’t intend to test the car’s “best ever” NCAP crash test results in which it gained a total score of 34 points and 5 Star rating. But I can confirm that the whole front is very soft and friendly to people’s knees. The first end-of-summer rain revealed that the rear wiped area stops about 6” short of the top of the rear screen, but the rain sensitive front wipers are excellent, reacting immediately to deluges thrown up by trucks and even giving the screen a once over if the residue from someone else’s screenwash hits it. And, oh yes, despite running-in, it hasn’t used any oil. Finally, I’m getting to see an awful lot of new Avenses on the roads. Far more than I ever noticed of the old model. Since they can’t all be on long-term test in the hands of people like me, they must be becoming very popular. For the next report I’ll try and include some comparative sales figures. The T-Spirit also comes with all the extras you would expect from a higher spec model, leather seats, sat nav (not that great but okay), automatic wipers (can have a mind of their own sometimes) etc. The estate version is very roomy and easily accommodates 4 large adults. The boot is also large enough to accommodate most objects. Bad points: Style! While this car definitely looks more stylish from the car it replaces ... more I have had this car since 2006. This is a company car so I will not mention price.Good points:This car does everything well. The thing it does best though is eat up the motorway miles. It is such a relaxing car and the 2.2 litre diesel really does pull well. It is one of the first cars I have driven which you can drive 90mph+ and it still feels like you are doing 60 mph. Considering this size of car is probably going to spend a lot of time on the motorway this is a definite plus. Toyota reliability does also not disappoint. Had absolutely no problems yet after 2 years of use with 63k miles on the clock just the usual servicing. Usually what lets these cars down though is the interior which normally feels very shoddy. Not so with the Avensis. It feels like they have taken pointers from their parent company Lexus. The plastics feel solid. Usually after 1-2 years your start to hear these annoying little squeaks from somewhere but the Avensis is still like the day I got it. The T-Spirit also comes with all the extras you would expect from a higher spec model, leather seats, sat nav (not that great but okay), automatic wipers (can have a mind of their own sometimes) etc. The estate version is very roomy and easily accommodates 4 large adults. The boot is also large enough to accommodate most objects.Bad points:Style! While this car definitely looks more stylish from the car it replaces and the interior is better than most of the rivals it is still a very dull car on the outside, especially when put beside the new Mazda 6, new Mondeo or the new Honda Accord which is coming out in September. Although they did make some slight cosmetic changes in late 2006 which does make the car look slightly better. The car is a good handling car and safe with all these safety features and traction control but it just feels a bit boring to drive sometimes. Having said that though, after driving Vauxhalls, which is what I usually get lumbered with when I get a courtesy car, then I am always glad to get back into the Avensis, and don't even get me started on the Vauxhalls interior! Not to go off point...!Summary:This car is a safe car. It does everything well but it won't turn any heads and doesn't excel in any particular way, there is no Wow factor about it! If you do a lot of miles and want lots of trouble free miles and aren't too worried about style then the latest Avensis is a great choice. I didn't buy this car but the value should hold better than say a Mondeo or Vectra and is a better built car in my opinion plus there aren't as many about so it is more exclusive. I am due for a replacement soon. I will be testing out the competition, the new Mondeo does look nice and so does the new Accord, but if they can't match the Avensis I will definitely get another as it has probably been one of the best cars I have had and I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering to get one. ...less kyussmondo 27.02.2008 (27.02.2008) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D Saloon Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Excellent value for money Advantages: Reliability, consumption, price, ride confortDisadvantages: VIsibility ...Mondeo.
