This is a company car so I will not mention price.Good points:This car does everything well. The thing it does best though is eat up the motorway miles. It is such a relaxing car and the 2.2 litre diesel really does pull well. It is one of the first cars I have driven which you can drive 90mph+ and it still feels like you are doing 60 mph. Although they did make some slight cosmetic changes in late 2006 which does make the car look slightly better. The car is a good handling car and safe with all these safety features and traction control but it just feels a bit boring to drive sometimes. Having said that though, after driving Vauxhalls, which is what I usually get lumbered with when I get a courtesy car, then I am always glad to get back into the Avensis, and don't even get me started on the Vauxhalls interior! Not to go off point...!Summary:This car is a safe car. It does everything well but it won't turn any heads and doesn't excel in any particular way, there is no Wow factor about it! If you do a lot of miles and want lots of trouble free miles and aren't too worried about style then the latest Avensis is a great choice. I didn't buy this car but the value should hold better than say a Mondeo or Vectra and is a better built car in my opinion plus there aren't as many about so it is more exclusive. I am due for a replacement soon. With the new version Toyota has clearly upped its game and as well as keeping up with improved Fords and Opels is after more upmarket competition. The general quality and comfort is easily in the Passat standard, and probably also Audi A4 as well. Unless you give a high value to the badge on the front of the car, given that Toyota will also have a superior build quality to these other makes, it's hard to see really convincing arguments in ......racer you don't buy a toyota in the first place. I can't think of any normal driving situation in which you would need more acceleration, unless you are completely mad and overtaking against incoming traffic in an insanely small space. And obviously if you need tons of acceleration and the car doesn't give it to you right away, you just change down a gear. The engine can cope fine with cruising at 140 or 150 kmh, even on very long journeys. It takes twenty minutes for the heating to work properly (our VW TDI takes less than five) Dreadful in a crosswind, frightened passengers on more than one occasion. The car really does justify the reasonable 16K (approx) price tag, as I fail to see any competitor in this price bracket that can offer the superior build quality, unrivalled safety and sheer quality of drive. In terms of performance, there can be a minor lag as with most diesels, but will swiftly deliver you to 60mph in about 11 seconds. What a great move this was!When debating with my wife over what we needed from a car, I initially turned my nose up at a Toyota. A completely illfounded judgement now that i look back on it. It ticks all of our boxes as well as the company boxes. It needed to look nice tooReasons for buying - Company.As it was going to be a company car, it needed to be reasonable to run and service, a low tax bracket for my pocket, low depreciation on resale value and good to the enviroment.The Toyota wins hands down in all of the above points.Lets now talk you through the car.External Looks/Styling.Very very good. I chose a hatchback and I think this is the nicest looking and most executive in appearance of all 3 Toyota Avensis.The T3-X model that I chose has all of the standard Avensis bodywork features such as Colour coded bumpers and trim, but it also comes with 17 inch, 8 spoke Gunmetal Alloys which are fantastic to look at if a bit of a pain to keep clean. The Sweeping curves of the bodywork are obviously aerodynamically sound as well as being pleasing to the eye. My T3-x has the optional reversing Sensors to aide when parking.The paintwork is immaculate and would highly recommend the Sterling Silver colour over all of the others. The Black, Blue and Red versions all look old fashioned where as the Silver Metallic gives it a little extra executive look and feel.Internal Looks/Styling.Again fantastic! The T3-x differs to the T2 in that it has more chrome and carbon fibre looking pieces to the dash and door trim as well as coming with a Chrome and leather gearknob and Steering wheel. There contours of the dash and controls looks very modern with an easy of operation attached. The dark seats and carpets hide the occasional spills and dirt very well too!Cockpit Vision.Very important and also scoring quite highly here. All round vision is particularly good with an adjustable driver seat in 6 directions so shorter people (like the wife!) can be jacked right up to get maximum visibility. The reversing sensors give great coverage to the rear and the fully adjustable and fully foldaway electric wing mirrors give great lateral vision. Only minor points are the Rear window is not the largest when it comes to visibilty as the boot rides quite high. Also the rear pillars on the drivers side leads to a little bit of a blindspot. Be careful when pulling out on the motorway!Cockpit comfort.Great! The car rides the bumps very well and gives a fantastically smooth journey. The seats are very comfortable while giving ample legroom to even the tallest of people, back and front. Driving position is fully adjustable along with the steering column to maximise comfort.There is an arm rest in both the front and back for those that require it.For those that drink ont he move there is a fully accessible drinks holder that pops out of the dashboard. Great for preventing spillages on the seats!In car entertainment.Again very good. The CD player is dash mounted and fully integrated. Replacing it with an after market model is completely uneccessary and would require some specialist blanking plates from Toyota! It is a lovely loud and clear sounding stereo that is able to play both traditional CDs as well as MP3 CDs. Handy if you want to stick 10 albums on one CD! It is not a multi changer CD player though so you are limited to 1 CD at a time. For those that require Phone charging or Games playing, there is a 12 Volt Cigarette lighter in the front of the vehicle as well as one in the rear built into the the back of the front seat arm rest. Great for kids with screens or game boys in the back!One thing that the T3-x does not have compared to the T3-s is satellite Navigation. This is dash mounted but I chose the X over the S as the sat nav will become outdated within a couple of years im sure while the extras you do get with the X compared to the S (cruise control, leather steering wheel, electric mirrors) will always be current!In car extra features.The T3-x does come with the following features that the standard models do not:-Cruise control.Fuel/Trip computer.Front and Rear fog lights.Variable Speed Wipers.Electric Heated and adjustable wing mirrorsDual Zone Climate control (so both front travelling occupants can have different temperatures blown at them!)Compared to the T3-s for the same price that has none of the above but does have Sat Nav, I think this is the best option!Luggage Space/ Cabin storage.Massive massive boot space! You can quite happily get the weekend luggage, a pushchair, a set of golf clubs and still have space for more!Inside the cabin you have lots of storage spaces in the dash (top and bottom), behind the seats, in the centre console/armrest and a fully lockable glove box. Lots of hiding holes for mobiles, maps, sweets and other in car essentials.Performance.The D4-D engines are definitely the way to go with the Avensis. The Diesels out perform all petrol Models with ease in speed, torque and top speed. They are also better on fuel economy. I cannot see why anyone would actually choose the petrol model! The 2.2 litre engine boasts a fuel economy of 49mpg but im yet to achieve this . However 40-45 is very common on a tank of fuel. Range is around the 450 mile mark so works out to be about 11 pence per mile.0-60 time is a respectable 9.5 seconds and feels much quicker. The midrange torque of the car is fantastic and you can really feel it pull away when you are motorway driving. The brakes are also very good and feel very solid when braking from high speed.The 2 Litre diesel fas undergone an upgrade in the last year and is now not far behind the 2.2. However the extra bit of engine does give it a punchier feel when accelerating. Thanks to its 6 speed gearbox, you never feel like you are thrashing the engine either! Handling.Sticks to the road like Glue. Always feels very stable when turning and accelerating. Throw it into any situation and road condition and it feels solid underneath. No body roll either. Servicing/reliability.Touch wood, nothing major has gone wrong with it since I have owned it. servicing is relatively cheap compared to similar specced cars and the dealerships are very professional and knowledgable. The car so far has been bulletproof if a little heavy on tires. Possibly one of its only down points is its ability to chew through a set of goodyear boots very quickly. I blame this on the the light powersteering that gives you the ease of turning!Downsides.Very few thankfully.The car like i have already said is quite heavy on tires compared to similar sized cars i have owned. One other downside is the cabin noise from the road. This is very audible and does detract from the driving experience somewhat.Models Up/Down.....The Basic Model is the T2 which has none of the features mentioned in the in car extras above and is roughly £1500 cheaper.The T3-2 as mentioned is the same price but lacks many of what i would call driver features.The T4 is the next model up which has all of the T3-S and X models combined. This is an extra £1000 and in my opinion an expensive way to get Sat Nav in the T3-X!The Flagship model is the 190 which has the same sized engine (2.2 litre) but pumps out an extra 40 BHP! however the fuel economy is worse but does come with leather interior. It is also £3000 more expensive.Prices/costs.Well, I had a good discount through a dealer that supplies our company cars. The main interest in this Avensis lies under its bonnet where Toyota’s all-new D-4D motor – the first in a new generation of diesel donkeys – is found. It has provided Toyota’s worthy but dull family saloon, hatch and estate with a new appeal and a fresh lease of life. Question is, is that enough to let it get onto terms with long established European diesel players, or is it too little come too late?
