Steve Walker ReportsToyotas Corolla Verso is ruthlessly effective in fulfilling the compact-MPV role but it isnt the most flamboyant of vehicles and in no way would you credit it with any degree of sportiness. There was certainly room for a headline grabbing derivative to enliven the Versos public image but in typical Toyota style, rather than introduce a blistering performance version with big wheels, body kit and tooth chattering suspension, theyve dropped in a pair of powerful but practical 2.2-litre D4-D diesel engines. In the interests of keeping the Corolla Versos wining formula intact, it might be just as well. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value It was Vauxhall who pioneered the idea of performance derivatives of compact MPV products with their Zafira GSi and, subsequently, VXR models but similar bespoilered shenanigans may have appeared a little brash if applied to the staunchly sensible Corolla Verso. The diesel direction that Toyota have taken is far subtler but thats not to say that it hasnt injected a useful touch of pizzazz into the line-up. The engine is available in two forms. We have the 136bhp 2. 2-litre D-4D 135 and the 177bhp 2.2-litre D-4D 180 D-CAT. That D-CAT tag attached to the range-topping unit stands for Diesel - Clean Advanced Technology and Toyota are keen to trumpet the fact that this is the most powerful as well as the cleanest diesel engine in the Corolla Versos class. The D-4D 135 version is reassuringly hi-tec too. It features an all aluminium cylinder block that cuts back on weight and, along with the offset piston design, helps to reduce noise. Theres a large intercooler as well, for improved heat exchange and greater efficiency. The engine is a real all-rounder, producing a hefty 310Nm of torque at 2,000rpm and capable of averaging nearly 45mpg while emitting 167g/km of C02 and a lower level of Nitrogen oxides than the 114bhp 2.0-litre engine it replaced. The range-topping D-4D 180 D-CAT powerplant takes things further. Theres the obvious power increase over the D-4D 135 model but with this car, average fuel economy of 41.5mpg and C02 emissions of 178g/km are achieved through some groundbreaking technological wizardry. The D-4D 180 utilises the piezoelectric common-rail injection system for extremely fast, high pressure fuel injections and, therefore, extremely efficient combustion. The system can actually make up to five fuel injections per cycle, rendering it highly responsive to demands being placed on the engine by the driver. The D-4D 180 also employs ceramic glow plugs which are highly durable and reach their ideal operating temperature quicker for rapid cold starts in low temperatures."The T 180 is a sporty as the Corolla Verso should be allowed to get..."The D-CAT technology is all about cutting emissions but its not just the output of C02 thats reduced. The D-CAT system also dramatically diminishes levels of particulates in the exhaust gasses. A gas recirculation system and Toyotas Diesel Particulate Reduction System in the four-way catalyst help to filter and burn off higher levels of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide than in more conventional engines. Theres a big sense of satisfaction that Corolla Verso D-4D drivers will be able to glean from the knowledge that their vehicle is pumping significantly less nastiness out into the atmosphere than other diesels of similar size but the real appeal with the 2. 2 D-4D engines is a rather more selfish one. The performance on the road of both powerplants is very good for a number of reasons but anyone purchasing a Verso D-4D with visions of tyre shredding acceleration and scalpel-sharp handing is going to be disappointed. The real strength of both engines is refinement. Its testament to just how quiet the D-4D technology is that wind noise around the A-pillars becomes a little intrusive in the Verso at motorway speeds. Drivers of less advanced oil-burning cars would give their eye teeth to hear the wind buffeting their bodywork as its invariably drowned out by the droning rumble of their engine. You genuinely could mistake these diesels for petrol-powered cars were it not for the huge swell of torque that dominates the mid-range. Toyota have made the D-4D 135 available right across the Corolla Verso range, so buyers can specify it in T2, T3 and T Spirit trim with prices starting at £16,100, but the D-4D 180s arrival prompted the inauguration of a special T 180 trim level which is exclusively offered with that engine priced at £20,900. The intention is for the T 180 to act as a halo performance model over the rest of the Corolla Verso line-up and why not? 177bhp is a sizable amount for a compact MPV to be packing. The problem it that theres no initial urgency to the D-4D 180s performance: 0-62mph takes a modest 8.8s and theres a reasonable 128mph top speed but its nothing too dramatic. The engines trump card lies in its huge 400Nm torque output between 2,000 and 2,600rpm, this gives exceptional pulling power in the mid-range that makes mincemeat of overtaking manoeuvres and steep inclines. The driving experience is languid and muscular but doesnt deliver the feistiness and thrills youd expect from a truly hot compact MPV. The handling is assured enough but never excites and you dont really feel inclined to press on. The T 180 gets a sensible range of extras, enough to differentiate it without going too far. 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear glass, a perforated leather steering wheel cover and various interior trim detail features are included, so its hardly a Max Power wannabe. Toyota have sensibly kept things subtle in a way that doesnt tarnish the Versos general sheen of competence by forcing it into pretending to be something its not. Both of the 2.2-litre D-4D engines are a good match for the Corolla Verso. The car is thoroughly user-friendly, from the easy-to-operate seating system to that trademark Toyota reliability and the marked absence of the kind of niggling annoyances that drive you up the wall during day to day use. Its well built, neatly designed and just a little but dull - which is exactly how an MPV should be. If you want a compact MPV to fulfil the compact MPV role, Toyotas Corolla D-4D models are a great choice. Their blend of refinement, economy, cleanliness and torquey performance is ideal for this kind of vehicle. If you want a hot hatchback, do yourself a favour and buy one. The T 180 is as sporty as the Corolla Verso should be allowed to get. Verso signifies extra space and interior flexibility, and finds its best expression of all in the Corolla Verso, which almost seems to squeeze the functionality of a full-sized MPV into the shell of a compact MPV. The secret of the Corolla Verso's success since its 2004 launch and its continuing appeal today lies in its disarming simplicity. No doubt Toyota's engineers have put together an incredibly complex car, but their main achievement was making the vehicle remarkably easy to configure and reconfigure. Controls, switches, levers and buttons all operate with minimum fuss, little effort and do exactly what you expect them to. That may sound rather obvious, but it's not always the case in a sector of the market that frequently overcomplicates matters in an effort to impress. Every compact MPV needs a party piece. The Corolla Verso's is its ability to offer up to seven seats - five of which are full-sized - or a huge, completely flat loadspace with equal aplomb. Switching from one to the other, or any of the combinations in between, is straightforward and can mainly be achieved with the use of one hand in a matter of seconds. The arrival of new 2.2-litre diesel engines in late 2005 broadened the already comprehensive range. The more powerful 177bhp unit is even being promoted as a performance variant dubbed T180 complete with rakish alloy wheels. However, with a 0-60mph time of nine seconds being only half a second quicker than the 134bhp model, and the same decidedly unsporty MPV shape, such claims fail to convince. Anyone with doubts about their ability to drive a people carrier should take a test drive in the Corolla Verso. Its demeanour is so utterly car-like that it should provide complete reassurance. In town it is nimble, while motorway miles glide by with no trouble and very little wind or road noise. Our verdict on the Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 D-4D T180 If you're looking for a safe, solid and trustworthy way of transporting five adults or up to seven children, the Corolla Verso must necessarily be near the top of your shopping list. Newer arrivals such as the Mazda5 can match it, and the perennially popular Renault Scenic will always attract some buyers, but the Corolla Verso really does have big-car functionality in a compact package. Costs Entry-level models with less powerful, older engines look like bargains. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive models is larger than is usual in this sector of the market. Continuing demand for good used examples should help resale values remain relatively firm, and owners will expect to pay less for servicing and remedial work than is the norm. Space and practicality Fitting a quart into a seven-seater pint pot, the Corolla Verso's interior configuration provides a masterclass in what can be done, taking over from Vauxhall's Flex7 system. Often, such a multitude of options is nice in theory but more bother to achieve than it's worth. In the Corolla's case, virtually any combination can be summoned up with a quick release of a catch or two. Tailgate opens to create huge aperture Controls and display In an attempt to make the dials more interesting, they are brightly illuminated during the day, more subtly so at night. The effect being aimed at is a sort of vague futurism, but it isn't wholly convincing. It can even be disconcerting when, going through a tunnel for instance, the lights dim rather than brighten. Whatever the cosmetic quibbles, it should be noted that controls cannot be faulted for functionality. Comfort Though far from luxurious, the Corolla Verso provides a fairly classy space in which to spend a few hours. Noise and vibration levels are well suppressed and the softish suspension effectively absorbs imperfections in the road surface. Seats are generally supportive, if not quite as imaginatively shaped or as firm as in some European rivals. Car security Toyota's Lexus brand regularly tops independent security tests, so it is reassuring than many, if not all, of the same features are employed in regular Toyotas, including the Corolla Verso. Locks put up good resistance to tampering and all components are traceable to the car's individual VIN code. The expected engine immobiliser and deadlocking are standard features, an alarm is not. Car safety Toyota has built up a strong reputation on safety, which the Corolla Verso does nothing to undermine. It has performed very well in crash tests thanks to one of the more effective systems for dispersing the energy produced in a collision. Such life-saving features rarely get the acknowledgement they deserve, overshadowed as they are by the number of airbags and alarms on offer. Incidentally, the Corolla Verso isn't short of either. Driver appeal Despite claims to the contrary from Toyota, not even the T180 model is particularly exciting to drive. Its impressive torque in the low to mid range certainly makes it a great overtaker in a straight line, but further performance credentials are mitigated against by the Corolla Verso's relatively high sides, its short wheelbase and controls providing an easy drive rather than an involving one. Dials try a little too hard to be stylish Family car appeal A young family will judge the Corolla Verso to be their perfect vehicle. It'll fit neatly onto the drive of any suburban semi or into a supermarket parking bay, can perform school run or shopping duties with equal aplomb and can even act as an ersatz minibus for junior sports teams. It's also reliable enough to ensure that you never find the family huddled on the hard shoulder waiting for the breakdown services to arrive. First car appeal Lacking quirky character or attitude of any sort, few if any first time drivers will warm to the Corolla Verso. Quality and image No one buys a Toyota to impress the neighbours - purchases are driven by far more common sense than that. The company's build quality is legendary, though close inspection of some of the switchgear and interior shutlines may raise one or two questions.
