It finished production in 2000 as a mid-sized four-door sedan sold in the Japanese market. It was typically marketed as a four-door version of the Celica . Over time, it became a sister car to the Corona but was sportier, with distinctive bodywork and interior—aimed at the youth market and generally filling a niche between the Corolla and Corona. At that point it was replaced by the Allion . The Carina name has been used in markets other than the USA at various times to represent other cars, usually the Corona . However, the Japanese-market Carina was a different car entirely. The inspiration for the name Carina came from the Carina star cluster . [ 1 ] Show room appeal was enhanced by the inclusion in the price of reclining seats with built-in head restraints, radio, clock, reversing lights and servo-assistance on the brakes: these were features which, where available on competitor models, tended to be offered only as options at extra cost. [ 2 ] The A10 Carina was also exported to the US, but its introduction coincided with the introduction under President Nixon of a 10% import duty [ 3 ] [ 4 ] and sales volumes were disappointing. Cars destined for export were increasingly switched towards other markets in Europe [ 4 ] and elsewhere and US exports stopped after only two years: the company progressed plans to build car plants in the USA. The original model featured a 1588 cc OHV (2T) engine, with 4-speed gearbox and front-wheel disc brakes. [ 1 ] It was revised in 1972 with a restyled body, new rear light cluster and filler cap repositioned in rear quarter panel, restyled front grille and fascia. The specification was once again revised in 1974 including sealed cooling system, improved brakes, restyled wheels with flared wheel arches, and restyled interior fittings. For 1976, it received a new front and rear-end styling, dual-line braking system with servo and a repositioned handbrake and gear lever. Wheelbase was increased slightly. [ 1 ] In most markets it was fitted with the same 1588 cc 2T engine as its predecessor. In the Carina, an output of 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp) was claimed. The option of automatic transmission was added. An estate car model was introduced, with heavy-duty leaf-spring rear suspension. In 1980, all models had revised front- and rear-end styling and lighting equipment, also improved interior specification. The following year, saloon and coupé models (but not the estate) were fitted with 5-speed gearbox as standard, with optional automatic transmission. Released in Japan August 1977. November 1977, 3T-U Series 1800 cc engine emissions are updated. May 1978, GT 1600 cc cars and vans added a 3-speed Automatic Transmission. The 1800 cc car engine was upgraded to the 13T-U. The 1600GT-2T-GEU engine is in compliance with the 53 year regulation period of Showa-era emissions regulation. Output was improved from 110 PS (81 kW; 108 hp) to 115 PS (85 kW; 113 hp). The options list was updated to include a urethane bumper for impact improvement. September 1978, 3T-EU engine (1800cc OHV EFI) installed with ST-EFI, SR-EFI has been added. Initially only included with a 5-speed Manual Transmission. Relevant vehicle emissions in 1978. At the same time, 2000GT of 18R-GU EFI engine and the (18R-GEU-), fit 1978 exhaust emission regulations. In addition, 18R-U engine-change-21R-U, 1978 conformity emission. The car followed its predecessors in retaining a front-engine rear wheel drive configuration even though by now competitor manufacturers were following a trend of switching to front-wheel drive in this class. In addition to the petrol engined versions the Carina was now offered with the option of an 1839 cc diesel engine, 1C , for which a power output of 64 bhp (48 kW; 65 PS) was claimed, in those markets where fuel pricing and availability rendered this appropriate. The first car was released in September 1981. This was the last model to use rear wheel drive. The engine was the 4A-GE. The Corona shared the chassis with this vehicle, and the Corona was updated the following year. The 1800SE had power windows, and the trim level 1800SE "EXTRA・EDITION" was added. Years 1981 and 1982, the car was used by private teams racing in the Dakar Rally for Japan in the 2-wheel drive class. The car had achieved four championships in the marathon class divisions, and it was also a commemoration of the car. February 1982, the five-door wagon, "Surf" series was added. Toyota's Carina E is around in solid numbers on the secondhand market and it's a British-built car you can buy with real confidence. The `E` stands for `Europe`, identifying a Toyota that was supposedly specifically designed for the European market (though it didnt look any different from those sold on the other side of the world). This was the car that launched Toyota's presence in the UK in 1992, built at Burnaston in Derbyshire and powered mostly by engines from Deeside in North Wales. Since the car was launched, there's been plenty of hot new competition in the family sector. However, the Toyota's build quality, low depreciation and rear seat cabin space still makes it a force to be reckoned with. Toyota's response to the safety trend was tardy - Carina Es didn't get a drivers airbag (even as an option) until 1994 and dual bags and ABS werent standard until 1996. Apart from that (and the best-forgotten normally aspirated diesel), there isn't much to criticise. There's certainly no shortage of choice; three bodystyles (saloon, five-door and estate), at least seven different trim levels and a selection of four different 16-valve DOHC petrol engines await you. If you can afford a recent model, try and find one with Toyota's astonishingly frugal 1.8-litre lean burn petrol engine. The more you drive a Carina, the more you realise how carefully thought out Toyota's thrust into the medium range marketplace has been. Though the styling reminds you of at least four other models in the class, the end result is not unappealing. Prices start at around £1,000 for the first 1992 K-registration `XL`-trimmed models in entry-level fuel injected 1.6-litre form. On an M-plate with plusher GL trim, you could expect to pay around £1,700. The 2. 0-litre models start at around £1,100 on a `K` with GL trim, while more common M registered examples start at about £1,900. For a sportier GT on an `M` plate, allow another £100. Probably the pick of the bunch in terms of engines is the lean burn 1.8-litre unit introduced in 1995. These are relatively rare but worth having, with prices tending to start at around £1,900. You may very well come across special edition models - the Crescendo, the Kudos and the Charisma for example - but don't be tempted to pay more than £50 or so extra for them. There was also a noisy normally aspirated 2.0-litre diesel version offered from launch. Prices vary little between saloons and five-doors, but estates are worth around £300 more, model for model. Very little goes wrong. The Xi and XLi trimmed cars are good value and the GL variants have lots of equipment. The estates aren't all that spacious and the non-turbo diesels not all that economical. Don't worry about uninspiring GTi models either (they're rarer than hens' teeth anyway). (Based on a 1.6-litre Carina E - ex Vat) Good quality but slightly pricier than the mainstream competition. A new clutch will cost you about £90. Front shock absorbers are about £50 and rears around £80. An exchange alternator is about £240, a radiator about £150 and a replacement windscreen close to £140. A tail lamp is about £60 and a nearside front wing about £140. A catalyst is about £700. Foolproof is the word that springs to mind. Carinas have never been favourites with driving enthusiasts - and this one is no different. If, however, you want solid, well equipped, reliable family transport, then you won't care about that. All the engines offered (apart from the diesel) are willing performers. The 1.8-litre lean burn unit combines ready acceleration (rest to 60 in 11. 7 seconds on the way to 118mph) with impressive economy; at least 35mpg around town and between 45-50mpg at cruising speeds. Most cars you'll come across will have electric front windows, sunroof, power steering, stereo, rev counter and more. Basically, it depends upon your choice of trim - X, XL, GS, CD or GL. Either way, there are more creature comforts, pound for pound, than with most of the competition. A sound family secondhand buy. It's almost impossible to go wrong buying a Carina E. Peace of mind starts here.
