For the purpose of brevity, the insider-chassis code of "AE86" is used to describe the whole range. In classic Toyota code, the "A" represents the engine that came in the car (the 3A and 4A) and the E86 represents the 6th revision of the fifth generation (E80 series) of the E model which is the Corolla. The visual difference between the Levin and Trueno is that the Levin has fixed-headlights and the latter has retractable headlights. The export model name Corolla covers both variations. The AE86 (along with the lower spec 1,452 cubic centimetres (1.452 L) AE85 and 1587 cc SR5 versions) was rear wheel drive (unlike the front wheel drive CE80, EE80 and AE82 models), and is among the last rear-drive cars of its type, at a time when most passenger cars were being switched to front-drive. In 1987, there was a limited edition model of the AE86 called "Black Limited" that served as a send-off model before the AE86 chassis was replaced later that year by the front wheel drive AE92 Corolla/Sprinter range. In Japan, the AE86 was also known as the Hachi-Roku (ハチロク?), Japanese for "eight-six". This engine had a maximum gross power output of 130 PS (96 kW) and 110 lb·ft (150 N·m) of torque in standard form, though it was later down-rated to 120 PS (88 kW) and 105 lb·ft (142 N·m) in net output.[1][2] The AE86 came with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and later came with the option of an automatic. The 4A-GE engines used in the AE86 and AW11 were equipped with T-VIS (Toyota Variable Intake System). The AE86 had an optional Limited Slip Differential (LSD).[1] In North America, a modified 4A-GEC engine was used to comply with California emissions regulations. Power was rated at 112 bhp (84 kW), and 96 ft·lbf (136 Nm) of torque.[1] The AE86 used ventilated disc brakes. The car was equipped with a MacPherson strut style independent suspension at the front and a four-link live axle with coil springs for the rear. Stabilizer bars were present at both ends.[1] Lower-spec American AE86 SR5 models used the 1587 cc 4A-C SOHC unit, did not have an optional LSD, and had rear drum brakes. Also, the SR5 model had a softer suspension, and small styling and interior changes. Models equipped with the 4A-GE engine received a 6.7" rear differential, while 3A-U, 4A-U, and 4A-C models received a smaller, weaker, 6.38" rear differential. The AE86 SR5 (4A-C equipped) had an optional automatic transmission, though the GT-S model (with the 4A-GE DOHC engine) only came with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox. One of the staff who was behind the car's engineering work was Nobuaki Katayama, who would later head the company's motorsport department and who would become chief engineer of the Altezza project a decade later.[citation needed] An article in Car Magazine in April 1999, stated he has a photo of an AE86 hung in his office. Variety of AE86s at 2004 Hachiroku.com.au Annual AE86 Meet-Up in Melbourne, Australia. Both the Levin and Trueno variants were offered with either a 2-door coupe or 3-door liftback (sometimes called hatchback) body style. The Levin and Trueno were generally identical, apart from fixed, rectangular headlights on the Levin and pop-up headlights on the Trueno. Minor bodywork changes were made in 1986 which resulted in different tail lights for both Levin and Trueno models, along with the coupe and hatchback styles. The models sold between 1983–1985 are sometimes referred to as "zenki" (前期, lit. early period), and the models sold from 1986–1987 are referred to as "kouki" (後期, lit. latter period).[3] The coupe version is considered to be the more rigid and lighter version of the two.[1] [edit] Models/specifications In Japan, the DOHC 4A-GEU AE86 was offered in GT, GT-APEX and GTV trims as the Corolla Levin or Sprinter Trueno, with the SOHC 3A-U AE85 version sold in a variety of trims including SR, GT, et cetera. In North America, the top-spec DOHC 4A-GEC was sold as the Corolla GT-S AE88, with the SOHC 4A-C AE86 bearing the Corolla SR5 tag. Both versions sold with pop-up headlights only. Euro spec models were sold as the Corolla GT with DOHC engines and fixed Levin-style headlights. The Middle East received the same basic model as the North American market, with pop-up headlights and the regulated 5 mph (8 km/h) bumpers. The lightest AE86 is the Japanese 2 door GT model which weighs 910 kg (2,006 lb). It has the same exterior as the GTV trim, but with the interior of the AE85 with the exception of the gauges, and is equipped with rear drum brakes. [edit] North American AE86 specifications There are three types of Corolla Sport RWD for the US market: DX, SR5, and GT-S, though the DX was generally an internal Toyota designation, as brochures, and advertising do not include the DX designation;[1] it consisted of a lower trim level, lighter duty suspension parts and the like. Even after production of the car was discontinued, many privateer teams still raced the AE86, and it is still a popular choice for rallying and club races today. Part of the continued appeal of the AE86 for motorsports is its rear-drive configuration, a feature not available in most newer lightweight coupes. In Group A world rally cars (1600 cc class) the 4A-GZE engine was popular. In Group A touring car races, the car either dominated the lower category where eligible or fought it out with Honda Civics or the later AE92s and AE101s whilst maintaining its competitiveness. In Ireland, where rallying is considered one of the most popular forms of motorsport, as organizing regulations are more relaxed compared to that of other countries, the AE86 was popular when new, and is still so popular that teams will purchase cars from the UK due to local shortages. The AE86 is also popular for rally use in Finland, where the cars can be competitive in the F-Cup competition for naturally aspirated 2WD cars. Drifting AE86 The semi-factory supported Kraft team entered a spaceframe Trueno at the JGTC with a 3S-GTE engine that came from a SW20 MR-2 Turbo producing about 300 hp (224 kW) for the JGTC GT300 regulations in 1998. Despite being popular with the racefans, the car had minor success and was abandoned from use halfway through the 2001 season in favor of a newly delivered MR-S. The rear wheel drive configuration, combined with the AE86's light weight (approximately 2300 lb (950–970 kg) curb weight), balance and relatively powerful (and easy to tune) 4A-GEU engine made it popular among the Japanese hashiriya (street racers in Japanese), many of whom raced in mountain passes (touge in Japanese) where the corners suited the AE86 best, especially on the downhill.[1] Among those who utilized this car was Japanese racing legend Keiichi Tsuchiya also known as the Dori-Kin ("Drift King" in Japanese). Mitsu Ide helped popularize the sport of drifting, which involves taking a car on a set of controlled slides through corners.[1] The AE86's FR configuration made it well suited to this kind of cornering, and currently the car is a mainstay of drift shows and competitions. The main character of the anime and manga Initial D, Takumi Fujiwara, uses his father's AE86 for racing and making his tofu deliveries. [edit] Reintroduction by FT-86 Main article: Toyota FT-86 Concept Autoblog released concept photos of the Toyota FT-86 Concept car, stating that a Subaru 2.0 liter boxer engine will come as standard.[4] It was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 2009, with sales expected to begin in 2012.[5] FT86 Concept. Rumors of a new small RWD sports car from Toyota had been going around since about two years prior, spawned by earlier concept drawings seen in the Japanese magazine Best Car.[6] At the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) presented an upgraded version of the car - FT-86 G Sports concept as part of Toyota G Sports car conversion series. The upgraded model has different fenders and bumpers. It features a vented bonnet, front lip and a rear spoiler made from carbon fiber, new wheels and a custom exhaust. The interior is upgraded with Recaro bucket seats and a rollcage. Horizontally opposed 2000 cc engine is upgraded with a turbocharger.[7] On January 26, 2010, the publishers of Option released the first issue of Hachiroku Damashii magazine. It is translated as "The Soul of Hachiroku". The magazine targets both Toyota AE86 and Toyota FT-86 Concept cars and features FT-86 G Sports Concept car on the cover.[8] The FT-86 concept debuted in Europe at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This was the first time the FT-86 concept was presented outside Japan.[9] [edit] Notes ^ a b c d e f g h Drift Japan » Toyota Corolla AE86 - AE86 History and Overview ^ "Classic Cars Page". Certainly one of the most popular. Thanks to its ultra lightweight chassis, and bizarre rwd drivetrain for a family car, the Toyota ae86 is a car which since its creation in 1983, has never been repeated. 0-60 in 8.5s from the famed 4A-GE engine with aorund 120bhp depending on location is popular as is a swap to 4A-GZE supercarged version form the Toyota MR2 mk1. the car now demands up to £5000 for a perfect classic, and expect to pay £3000 for a good example. If you can get one, you can create your very own Hachi-Roku as seen in the Initial D cartoon and game. A great car with unlimited potential and a car of choice for Keichii Tsuchiya. Classic 80s Japanese beast which started it all! Toyota Altezza/ Lexus IS200 IS 300 Luxury, yes, but this Lexus can be made into a dream of a drift car. While the IS300 has the most power from its 3.0l inline six, it only comes in automatic in the UK. However the IS200 has only 155bhp! 2 things you can do... add the Official Toyota Team Europe (TTE) Supercharger kit for around 215bhp, and a large torque increase across the range, or go for a Japanese import Toyota Altezza. We'd go for the Toyota Team Europe Supercharger kit, as it has good warrenty and the option for much larger gains by upgrading the pulleys, and fitting bigger intercooler systems. Well, I have about $5,000. I want a rear wheel drive car to learn how to drift in. These are both really good cars to learn in, and they are cheap. But the 240sx comes stock with almost twice the horsepower of the AE86. The AE86 comes with about 90hp while the more powerful 240sx has about 150hp. I would like some power behind the car. Does anyone know how much hp I can get out of a Corolla and will it make up for it's lack of power to start with. I know the 240sx has a almost endless amount of after market parts for it, so far in my research I have not found the same amount of parts for the Corolla. I can get both the cars for about $2500 each. If I do get the 240sx I can get a sr20 engine which would give me almost 200hp with my budget of $5000. Can I get the same amount of power out of the AE86? 11 months ago Report Abuse by Vipassan... That way, when you fail miserably, and wreck the car a few dozen times, as you try to learn to drift, you're not ruining a decent car. And yes, it's a matter of "when", and not "if". Also, learn something about drifting. IT IS NOT ABOUT POWER. The D1 champ a few years ago, only had a 160~ hp engine. And was completely destroying Skylines, Supras, and other higher HP cars. It's a matter of skill, not what car you drive, how much power you have, etc. So before you buy anything, learn more about what you're trying to do. Buy the way, the 90 hp AE86 is the single cam, carbureted, 8 valve model (called the Corolla SR5 here in the States). There is a more powerful twin cam 16 valve fuel injected stock one as well (called the Corolla GT-S here in the States). A 200 hp SR20? A stock 240SX only puts out around 140-145 hp- whether you're using a stock K24E/DE or a stock SR20DE. You're talking about the turbocharged SR20DET. That can be done with a 4AGZE supercharged Toyota engine with a Previa supercharger replacing the stock supercharger. Better yet, get the 160 hp, N/A 4AG20 valve for the Corolla and boost it. They both are great cars so the choice is yours. 11 months ago Report Abuse by 12pleze Member since: February 26, 2007 Total points: 18,910 (Level 6) Add Contact Block H.P. means nothing. Torque and engineering mean everything to performance. Toyota 's are built to not be modified, so a new engine willcost used 2000 or new 5000. It is still faster then Nissan 200sx.Hp gives top end and when you get to speed, keeps there. torque, especially with Toyota uses torque immediatly depending how hard you give gas. it has no torque band like other cars that are fast from 40-60MPH. 11 months ago Report Abuse 1 person rated this as good by Cris Member since: December 13, 2009 Total points: 102 (Level 1) Add Contact Block You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com 11 months ago Report Abuse Discover Questions in Toyota Which Toyota car should I get? Naderi Photography by Boyd Jaynes " class="body_link sz11">As I pull away in First gear I'm overcome with a sort of nervous excitement, the kind a teenager might feel as he's about to undo his first bra clasp. While I've never had that pleasure, I have put in plenty of hours with some fairly feisty mannequins in preparation for when my time finally comes. But this day my performance anxiety isn't about the high degree of difficulty of my one-handed hook-and-loop technique. No, I'm afraid of my passenger's opinion of my shift points and corner entry position.Riding shotgun in my little RSX is none other than Katsuhiro Ueo. He's not giving me any track instruction; we're merely going to an Outback Steakhouse for dinner (Japanese guys love American beef steak). I'm nervous because the night before I was part of the frothing mob, thousands-strong, who watched in awe as Ueo-san won the D1 Grand Prix USA (see our coverage elsewhere in this issue). Now the champion is in my car smiling cordially as I ride the clutch and mistake my wiper stalk for the turn signal. Did I mention that he doesn't speak English? Couple this with the fact that my entire Japanese vocabulary consists of pronouncing every I as an r. While my Engrish bit kills at the ramen house by the office, somehow I don't think it's appropriate in this setting.Further adding to this surreality is the hotel where Ueo is staying. This D1 champion is not at some trendy joint like the Mondrian or the W. Ueo and his crew are staying at a Days Inn. The accommodations couldn't be more appropriate because Ueo and his '85 Toyota Corolla Sprinter Trueno are the perfect examples of making more with less. Ueo wields his little AE86 like a slingshot, continuously beating up on the drift Goliaths.Ueo doesn't look like much outside of his car. He is courteous and humble, both very rare traits in a world of big-headed drifters who are more attention-starved than Jessica Simpson. At 5 feet 6 inches tall, Ueo is also small of stature. While he may walk softly, he carries a big stick with his tremendous driving talent. The 31-year-old from Kumamoto actually fell into drifting on a whim."At 26 years old I used to compete in gymkhana, and one of my younger colleagues took me to the touge [mountain] runs and challenged me," recalls Ueo. "He said, 'You cannot do this,' and I proved him wrong."Contrary to popular belief, gymkhana is not where Jonny and Russ get their T-shirts; that's Gymboree. Webster's (not Emmanuel Lewis, but the dictionary) defines gymkhana as "a timed contest for automobiles featuring a series of events designed to test driving skill." It's much like a large-scale autocross course. Ueo's gymkhana experience has served him well."In Japan in gymkhana, the cornering speed is a lot faster [compared with drifting] because of the slick tires," according to Ueo. "Because I'm used to the speed, I am able to control the car at the slower speeds for drifting. I competed in Class D, where the cars had under 2,000cc displacement with no limit on the modifications."When he's not unleashing his quart of blood technique on the D1 stage, Ueo runs his own tuning shop, Sift Racing Garage. The shop is also a used-car dealership, which explains Ueo's extensive car history. His list of past cars includes the "R32 and R33GTR [Skyline], KP61 [Starlet], AE86 [of course], Z32 [300ZX], etc., for a total of about 50 cars."But Ueo's heart lies with Hachi...Roku, that is. An AE86 Trueno was his first drift car, and since then, he has learned much about the setup of this nimble and well-balanced car. But there is the question of power. The D1 judges have always given big points to the high-horsepower turbo cars with their lurid, smoky drifts. We tried to clip a lock of...      read full captionWe tried to clip a lock of Ueo's hair as a keepsake.
