First came word that ToMoCo's Mr. Toyoda stated the brand needed to get sportier. Next came the very welcome news that along with Subaru, Toyota would be introducing a lightweight, RWD sport coupe ( now known to be the FT-86 ) that would cost about $20,000. Finally, there's the LFA , the $500,000 Lexus, that if the reviews are to be believed, just might be worth every penny. That's all well and good, but what if you want a sporty Prius? Meet the G Sports Series. To quote Toyota, the G Sports Series, " is designed for customers who strongly desire to own a unique vehicle, offering them a personalized interior and exterior design along with sports-driving performance." Put another way, Toyota is bringing the aftermarket in-house. With a total of five vehicles getting the G Sports Series treatment, Toyota is looking to offer customized sportiness to whomever wants it. Only two of the five cars however are U.S. market vehicles: the Prius and the FT-86. The Prius gets one hell of a body kit, including sleek rear-wheel skirts. While far from beautiful, we have to say that we like the G Series Prius much better than the regular one. But, the real news is the G Sports Series FT-86. Because it's the FT-86 is still officially a "concept" Toyota isn't revealing any hard data beyond RWD, 2.0-liters and six-speed manual. Good enough for us. As far as the G Sports Series version goes, it's a little busy and the rear wing is beyond unnecessary. Still, we're quite excited. Especially as the front of the FT-86 might just be revealing an intercooler. Which would mean a turbocharger. Or is that just a fancy radiator? Well, you know the Subaru version is going to have an intercooler... Just to add to the speculation, check out the drift-o-rific video after the jump . The Prius GT was something Toyoda tried once before but it never went to production. 146 combined HP instead of the 110 or so. They used a Yaris Sport 1.5liter at 99BHP with a little more pack voltage and it was getting 8.??second 0-62MPH. They claimed the MPG was the same which opened up a can of worms in itself. I like the Prius design but it's definitely made for a slushbox commuter. I liked the Toyota/Subaru take on the old Hachi-Roku(86) but naturally I'm not even in the price range for one. Reply ↓ ↑ report 7 downtoearth 12:39PM (1/17/2010) Allch Chcar: > They claimed the MPG was the same which opened up a can of worms in itself. What can of worms? Did you take price of these modifications into account? EVERY modern vehicle can be made more powerful, faster and more efficient at the same time if you pour lots of money into it. Money that customers in the dealership won't like to pay. Is it really so difficult to grasp? > I like the Prius design but it's definitely made for a slushbox commuter. Why? Because you said so? ↓ ↑ report 8 Allch Chcar 7:00PM (1/17/2010) They replaced the modified Atkinson Cycle 1.5liter for a standard Otto cycle that made more power increased the voltage and change the computer controls. If it got the same MPG either there was an error or those changes didn't affect MPG. At sub30mph speed like at an auto event, I could see it getting the same MPG :P. http://www.greencar.com/articles/prius-gt-debuts-goodwood-festival-speed.php And the engine was from the Echo not the Yaris, my mistake. And I said that because they put a planetary gear based CVT into the Prius. CVTs are inefficient, requiring more power than even a 4-spd automatic to do the same amount of work. The "better efficiency" since CVTs can choose a more efficient RPM is junk information. A CVT is slower than even a 4 spd Auto under acceleration. They used the CVT because it was more comfortable and smooth for drivers not because it was cheaper or even more efficient.. Honda at least offered 5spd transmissions with their first gen Insight and were capable of much better MPG than the CVT version. I'm RWD with Manual transmission biased on this point anyway. But I love that aeroHatchback style . The majority of new car buyers have chosen one transmission, I simply disagree with that choice. ↓ ↑ report 9 TheTom 6:02PM (1/16/2010) A sports car that is NOT an electric car? Not interested. (December 2009) Toyota G engine Manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation Production 1979–2005 The Toyota Motor Corporation G-family engine is a family of straight-6 piston engines produced from 1979 to present. It is notable in that only a single displacement, 2.0 L (1988 cc), was produced in this series. All were belt-driven OHC non-interference engines (except the VVT-i version in the IS200 which is an interference engine), with multivalve DOHC (except the 1G-EU SOHC 12 valve engine) and even variable valve timing added later. These engines were used as a lower-displacement alternative to the more upmarket M family and JZ family straight-6. Contents 1 1G 1.1 1G-EU 1.2 1G-FE 1.3 1G-GEU 1.4 1G-GE 1.5 1G-GTE 1.6 1G-GZE 2 See also [ edit ] 1G Since just one displacement was offered, all G-family engines are marked 1G and share the same "square" 75 mm (2.95 in) bore and stroke. Applications: Toyota Soarer Toyota Celica Supra Toyota Crown Toyota Cressida Toyota Altezza Lexus IS200 [ edit ] 1G-EU The Japan-spec 1G-EU was produced from 1979 through 1988. This is the only 2-valve SOHC member of the family. Output was 105-125 hp (78-93 kW) at 5400 rpm and 116–127 ft·lbf (157-172 Nm) at 4400 rpm. [ edit ] 1G-FE 1G-FE The DOHC 1G-FE uses a narrow valve angle and other fuel economy optimizations. It was introduced in 1988. Output was 135 hp (101 kW) at 5600 rpm and 130 ft·lbf (176 Nm) at 4400 rpm. In 1998 VVT-i was added, which bumped output to 160 hp (119 kW) at 6200 rpm and 148 ft·lbf (200 Nm) at 4400 rpm for the Altezza. With the end of the first generation Lexus IS this engine ceased production in 2005. Applications: Toyota Altezza / Lexus IS 200 Toyota Crown Toyota Chaser Toyota Mark II Toyota Cresta [ edit ] 1G-GEU The 24-valve DOHC 1G-GEU was intended for high performance. Produced from 1982 through 1986, mostly for the Japan market, output was 140-160 hp (104-119 kW) at 6200 rpm and 120–134 ft·lbf (162-181 Nm) at 5600 rpm. [ edit ] 1G-GE 1G-GE replaced 1G-GEU in 1988. It was detuned from 160 hp down to 150 hp and served the same cars as 1G-GEU did. It was produced for Supra GA70 until 1993. [ edit ] 1G-GTE Toyota 1G-GTE The 24-valve DOHC 1G-GTE added two CT-12 turbochargers to the versatile motor. There were 3 generations of this engine both air-to-air and air-to-water intercoolers were used, pushing output from 185 to 210 hp (138 to 157 kW) at 6200 rpm and 173 to 203 ft·lbf (234 to 275 Nm) at 3800 rpm using the air-to-air over the air-to-water. This was the most powerful engine of the whole G family. In 1991.5 it was replaced with >280 hp 1JZ-GTE on most Toyota cars. Spinning a bearing is a high risk in these engines if maintenance such as regular oil changes are not done due to oil starving in this engine. [ citation needed ] . Output was 168 hp (125 kW) at 6000 rpm and 167 ft·lbf (226 Nm) at 3600 rpm. Like the turbo, it was a 24-valve DOHC engine but featured a distributorless ignition system (DIS). 1G-GZE was mated only with automatic gearboxes. In August 1991.5 it was replaced with 1JZ-GE on Mark II/Chaser/Cresta, while serving on Crown until 1992.
