You’d learn how it bridged the gap between the borrowed-it-from-mum basic models and the forthcoming can’t-afford-the-insurance GTE. Wind the clock forward to 2007 and nothing’s changed, except the SR in question is now a Yaris rather than a Nova.Despite the T Sport name earning a reputation for pocket-sized thrills with the old Yaris, it’s been phased out for the new car. No matter, with its new 1.8-litre engine delivering a modest 131bhp, the SR is clearly made of similar warm-hatch stuff. With Dual VVT-i varying both intake and exhaust valve timing to produce optimum performance and economy, the engine is everything you would expect from Toyota. Unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily a good thing for the SR. In any gear, the four-cylinder unit drones with all the enthusiasm of an Avensis, needing to be pushed hard to get the best from it. Lacking in low-down torque, performance is only really worthy above 4000rpm.Chuck the Yaris into a corner and it responds obediently, tucking in as you lift off and pushing wide as you apply more throttle. Stiffer anti-roll bars have been fitted, while dampers have been sharpened and 8mm shaved off the ride height. Yet, strangely, the SR offers the kind of handling you would expect from a standard Yaris; a performance model really should raise the bar further. It’s also a shame that Toyota has engineered the SR’s stability control to play such an active role, especially as it can’t be switched off. At £12,995 the Toyota isn’t attempting to compete with the likes of the Clio 197, but it’s still got tough budget competition in the shape of the Suzuki Swift Sport, Fiat Panda 100HP and the recently introduced Clio 138 (see right). Certainly, the SR is a capable and affordable all-rounder, but what we really need is a Yaris GTE… For an alternative review of the latest Toyota Yaris visit our sister site carbuyer.co.uk Find a deal on this model from £10,754.00 with evo Click here and get 3 issues for just £1!For more performance car news and reviews, subscribe to evo magazine. < Previous Next > 0 Comments Bookmark this post with: More CAR REVIEWS evo Car Reviews Long Term Tests Citroen DS3 R reviewElectric Nemesis reviewNew Stratos supercar reviewDriven: Audi quattro ConceptNew BMW X3 reviewPorsche 911 Carrera GTS reviewSeat Ibiza reviewSee all evo Car Reviews Renault Clio WilliamsFord Fiesta Zetec SRadical Clubsport 1100Radical Clubsport 1100Infiniti G37S CoupeFord Fiesta Zetec SRenault Clio WilliamsSee all Long Term Tests Car Group Tests Audi R8 Spyder v supercar rivalsCitroen DS3 v hot hatch rivalsAston Martin Rapide v rivals370Z Roadster v its rivalsIbiza Cupra V Clio 200 CupMega hatch group testECOTY 2009See all Car Group Tests Advertisement Pictures EMAIL TO A FRIEND PRINT THIS evo RATING Low cost hot hatch driving Low thrills hot hatch driving evo SPECIFICATIONS Engine: In-line 4-cyl, 1798cc, 16v Max power: 131bhp @ 6000rpm Max torque: 128lb ft 4400rpm 0 - 60mph: 9.3sec (claimed) Top speed: 121mph (claimed) Price: £12,995 On Sale: April 2007 SPONSORED LINKS Company Website | Media Information | Contact Us | Privacy Notice | Subs InfoOur Other Websites: The First Post | Auto Express | Custom PC | IT Pro | IT Pro India | MacUser | Men's Fitness | Micro Mart | PC Pro | bit-tech | Know Your Mobile | Octane | Expert Reviews | Channel Pro | Know Your Cell | Know Your Mobile India | iGizmo | Digital SLR Photography | Den of Geek | The Week | Computer Shopper | Dennis Communications | Magazines | Mobile Phone Deals | Competitions | Health & Fitness | CarBuyer © 2010 Dennis Publishing Limited. But things have moved on, and most manufacturers agree that supermini-based performance models now require upwards of 180bhp to compete. As well as adding a new engine, Toyota has fettled the Yaris’s chassis set-up. The SR rides 8mm lower than lesser models, while the suspension is also stiffer.Toyota, though, thinks otherwise, and its latest racy baby does without a headline-grabbing power output. Producing a mere 131bhp, the new Yaris SR is a lightweight in this class of the market – instead, it delivers knockout punches for low running costs and affordable prices. However, this modest muscle is not the only big gamble Toyota is taking with the car. Having phased out the T Sport badge in the UK, the Japanese maker is calling the latest top-of-the-range Yaris the SR, a name that hardly has the same verbal punch...At its heart lies a brand new 1.8-litre powerplant, which uses Toyota’s latest Dual VVT-i technology to adjust both intake and exhaust valve timing to maximise efficiency. The result is impressive fuel economy of 39.2mpg on the combined cycle, plus CO2 emissions of 170g/km.On the road, this engine instantly seems to be lacking in character. The exhaust makes a typical Toyota drone rather than a satisfying rasp, and the motor can feel weak at low revs. Peak torque of 173bhp doesn’t arrive until 4,400rpm, when the motor comes alive and revs keenly to more than 6,000rpm. As with the 1.5-litre T Sport that went before it, the SR isn’t at its best on the motorway, as the five-speed transmission doesn’t have a tall cruising ratio. On-paper performance is reasonable, though, with the 0-60mph sprint dispatched in 9.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of 121mph. In reality, the Yaris is swift and punchy, although you do notice every one of the horsepower that it gives up to today’s hot hatch class leaders. As well as adding a new engine, Toyota has fettled the Yaris’s chassis set-up. The SR rides 8mm lower than lesser models, while the suspension is also stiffer. Despite these tweaks, the car still offers a comfortable and compliant ride, while its dynamic abilities are brought into focus. It’s not as nimble as the Ford Fiesta, but the SR turns into bends with enthusiasm and adjusts its cornering line neatly if you lift off the accelerator. Ultimately, the nose is still keen to push wide if you carry a bit too much speed into a bend, but the standard-fit stability control – which cannot be disabled – helps to bring it back in line.Engineers have also worked on the electric power-steering system, reducing the number of turns lock-to-lock to increase responsiveness. Yet while the changes are welcome, there’s still an artificial feel through the wheel – in this respect, the Toyota is put to shame by the likes of Peugeot’s 207.Priced at £12,995, the three-door SR is pitched with a comfortable gap between itself and the big hitters in the hot hatch class – the Vauxhall Corsa VXR costs £15,595 and the Renaultsport Clio 197 is £15,995. Pay an extra £500 and you can have the newcomer with the practicality of five doors. This seems good value until you look at Suzuki’s £11,499 Swift Sport, which is arguably more fun to drive.Toyota is proudly proclaiming the SR as “the best Yaris ever”. We don’t think it quite matches the grin-factor of the old T Sport, but the newcomer still represents a strong, mature and practical overall package. Even though it has a sizeable 1.8-litre powerplant under its bonnet, the Yaris SR bridges the gap between a pedestrian supermini and a fire-breathing performance model. And while the Toyota’s chassis does benefit from the sporty tweaks, it will still leave many enthusiastic drivers wanting more. Nevertheless, it’s entertaining to drive along a country lane and offers greater refinement than many rivals. AT A GLANCE SR is available as a three or five-door, and in addition to our 1.8, there’s a 1.3-litre petrol and 1.4 diesel model. Sporty touches set the interior apart. Days after filing my last report (Issue 1,081), where I mentioned the car’s anonymous styling, the Japanese machine was clearly invisible to the driver of an elderly Toyota Corolla. As I was pulling away from a petrol forecourt, there was a sudden crunch of metal and cracking of plastic. In his eagerness to get to a pump, the driver of the Auris’s ageing relative had swiped the front of my car, pulling off the bumper, smashing the headlight and creasing the front wing.Despite the accident taking place at no more than walking pace, I was still left shaken by the experience. My mood was made worse when I got out and was confronted with the sorry sight of the mangled Auris. To make matters worse, the crumbling Corolla of my assailant was left virtually unmarked by the impact. After swapping our insurance details, I set about making our battered Toyota a bit more presentable. A bit of silver gaffer tape soon had the bumper back in place, while a short test drive revealed that none of the mechanicals had been damaged. However, this was only a temporary fix, and a week later I took the Auris to DWS Bodyworks in Heathrow. The insurance-approved repair specialist took the keys and handed me a Vauxhall Corsa courtesy car to use while the Toyota was being fixed.Incredibly, the repairs took nearly three weeks to complete, with the final bill coming to a wallet-bashing £1,282. This large outlay highlighted the downside of car designers’ demands for ever bigger and glitzier headlamp units, as well as the cost of repainting fashionable colour-coded bumpers. On the plus side, the staff at DWS were always friendly and helpful, while the standard of workmanship is excellent – the Auris returned looking as good as new. It was great to get back behind the wheel of the Toyota after our enforced separation. While I had no complaints about the Corsa, it couldn’t compete with the Japanese car in terms of space, versatility and refinement.I often have to undertake long motorway journeys with two adults up front and three teenagers riding in the back – and the Auris copes with ease. There’s a decent amount of cabin space, noise levels are low and the brightly trimmed seats provide excellent support. Better still, these extended runs have boosted the Toyota’s fuel returns to a respectable 30.1mpg – an increase of 3.3mpg since our last report. The smooth 1.6-litre engine is now completely run in, which results in surprisingly peppy performance both around town and on the open road. It’s certainly a vast improvement over the slightly underpowered 1.33-litre unit of its predecessor. Other than the unfortunate forecourt accident, the Toyota has been performing faultlessly, apart from one very un-Toyota-like glitch. Not long before the collision, the Auris’s optional rear parking sensors fell silent. Decent visibility from the driver’s seat means I’ve coped without the kit, but I’ll need to get the system checked by a dealer before my next update!Until then I’ll continue to appreciate the Toyota’s fuss-free approach to family motoring. And while I understand that the Auris will never turn heads, I hope that other road users will at least acknowledge its existence in the future... I’ve become convinced that the Auris’s recent reduction in fuel use is partly down to me following the instructions of the illuminated green arrows. (Toyota Historical Background) stason.org Articles Development Books Teaching Photography Bits and Pieces TULARC Contact Us Site Map Search Favorites Free Online Books Alternative Health Description This article is from the Toyota Tundra FAQ, by Steve Yee with numerous contributions by others. 2.5 - What does SR5 mean anyways ? (Toyota Historical Background) In the latter part of the 1970's, the SR5 connotation denoted an option code for the HiLux series of trucks, similar to what the Z71 option code currently means for an upgraded Chevy or GMC pickup or Tahoe/Yukon. Originally released around 1975, the 'S' denoted Sport, 'R' denoted the RN motor code, and '5' denoted the 5-speed transmission. It quickly caught on and the SR5 connotation passed onto the Corolla and then onto other Toyota car models. Even though the HiLux name was dropped in 1979 for the United States market, it is still used today elsewhere in the world as the name for a Tacoma-like pickup and/or the 4Runner, depending on the market. Note: Some other historical information shows that the Corolla had the "SR5" designation first, then it was passed on to the HiLux series. The majority of historical information seems to promote the HiLux first, then the Corolla, rather than vice-versa. Today, the SR5 generally denotes a specifc Toyota trim level, with a more sporty look and wide flexibility for options. (Thanks to Dianne Whitmire at Carson Toyota as well as ToyotaOffRoad.com for the historial information.)   Continue to: prev: 2.4 - What's the difference between Base, SR5, and Limited ?
