Toyota T engine From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation , search The Toyota T series is a family of inline-4 automobile engines manufactured by Toyota beginning in 1970 and ending in 1985. It started as a Pushrod Overhead Valve ( OHV ) design and later, performance oriented Dual Overhead Cam ( DOHC ) variants were added to the lineup. Toyota had built its solid reputation on the reliability of these engines. The bottom end of the 503 Race engine is patterned after the 3T engine. Race engines based on the 2T-G include the 100E, 151E. All T engines utilize a timing chain and have a cast iron block with an alloy cylinder head with hardened valve seats and a hemispherical combustion chamber design ( HEMI ).. All T engines are carburated except those with electronic fuel injection, "E" designation. All T engines use a 2 valve OHV design except those with a DOHC performance head, "G" designation. The 12T/13T has a sub-cylinder directly behind the spark plug that leads into a smaller chamber for emission purposes. The Toyota T engine series was later replaced by the Toyota A engine series. Cylinder bore is 80 mm (3.15 in) and stroke is 70 mm (2.76 in). Output is 86 hp (64 kW) at 6000 RPM and 85 ft·lbf (115 N·m) at 3800 RPM. The more-powerful twin- carburetor T-B was produced for the first six years. Applications: Toyota Corolla E20 & E30 series Toyota Carina A10 series Toyota Celica A20 series [ edit ] 2T The larger 1,588 cc 2T was produced from 1970 through 1984. Cylinder bore is 85 mm (3.35 in) and stroke is 70 mm (2.76 in). The 2T engines are usually coupled with either a T40 4 speed/T50 5 speed manual transmission, or an A40 3 speed automatic transmission. Output for the early 2T-C bigport design is 102hp which is also due to different SAE testing methods, while the later version is 75 hp (56 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 87 ft.lbf (117 Nm) at 3,600 rpm. The twin-carb 2T-B produces 90-105 hp (67-78 kW) and 85-102 ft·lbf (115-138 N·m). Applications: Toyota Corolla E20 through E30 series Toyota Carina A10 through A60 series Toyota Celica A20 through A60 series Toyota Corona T70 series Daihatsu Charmant This engine was also commonly used in Australian Formula Two race cars during the 1970s and 1980s, where they typically made between 180 and 200hp. The 1979 championship was won by a Toyota 2T powered Cheetah mk6. In 1984 Peter Glover borrowed a Cheetah mk7 powered by Toyota 2T for one round. The car won the round and helped secure the championship. [ edit ] 12T The 1,588 cc 12T-U was produced from 1970 through 1983. It produces 88 hp (66 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 96 ft·lbf (130 N·m) at 3,400 rpm. Applications: Toyota Corolla E30 series Toyota Celica Camry TA40/50 series [ edit ] 2T-G A freshly rebuilt 2T-G bottom end. This one has been bored out to 89mm and fitted with a 3T crankshaft, forged Wiseco pistons and forged Eagle connecting rods. The 2T-G , produced from 1970 through 1983, is a DOHC version. Output is 110-125 hp (82-93 kW) and 105-109 ft·lbf (142-147 N·m). Variants include the air-injected 2T-GR , Japan-spec 2T-GU , and fuel injected 2T-GEU . Twin sidedraft carburetors were used in non-EFI versions. The 2T-G was replaced by the 4A-GE in most applications. Applications: Toyota Corolla Levin E20 through E70 series Toyota Celica A20 through A60 series Toyota Carina A10 through A60 series Like the 2.0 L 18R-G , the 2T-G was considered the flagship engine of Toyota's 1600 class until it was superseded by the 4A-GE in the 1980s. The 2T-G is still a popular engine for conversions in to classic Celicas and Corollas and are often suitable for classic and formula racing series. All 2T-G cylinder heads were cast by Yamaha, however, some are not marked as such. When bored out to a maximum of 89mm and in combination with a 3T crankshaft, the 2T and 2T-G will have a displacement of almost 2.0L. The 2T and 3T series use the same conrod dimensions, with the different pin heights on the pistons. Aftermarket pistons are available from very low (<7:1) through to very high (>13:1) compression ratios. [ edit ] 3T The 3T displaces 1,770 cc and was produced from 1977 through 1985. Cylinder bore is 85 mm (3.35 in) and stroke is 78 mm (3.07 in). The 3T OHV engines are mated to either of a T40 4 speed, T50 5 speed manual transmission, or an A40 3 speed, or A40D 4 speed automatic transmission. Output ranges from 70-105 hp (52-78 kW) and 93-120 ft·lbf (126-162 N·m) between the California 3T-C and Japan-spec fuel injected 3T-EU . Applications: Toyota Corolla E70 series Toyota Corona T130 series Toyota Celica A60 series Toyota Celica Camry TA50 series [ 1 ] [ edit ] 13T The 1,770 cc 13T-U was produced from 1977 through 1982. It produces 95 PS (70 kW) at 5,400 rpm and 15.0 kg·m (147 N·m) at 3,400 rpm with a twin barrel carburettor. Applications: Toyota Corolla T-18 Toyota Celica A40 series Toyota Celica Camry TA46 [ edit ] 3T-GTE The 3TGTE is the most performance orientated version of the 3T engine. It features a twin-spark (two spark plugs per cylinder) design, is mated to a W55 5speed transmission, and is turbocharged with a Toyota CT-20 Turbo to generate 160 hp (119 kW) at 6000 RPM and 152 ft·lbf (206 N·m) at 4800 RPM. Applications: Toyota Celica A40 and A60 series Toyota Carina A60 series Toyota Corona T140 series [ edit ] 4T-GTE This is the version of the T family which powered Toyota's Group B and World Rally Championship cars. The homologation engine features a 0.5 mm increase in bore over the 3T, giving 1,791 cc. In race trim it is a 2,090cc high-performance DOHC engine with a KKK/K27 turbocharger , electronic fuel injection , and a twin-spark ignition system, which produces 370 to 600 hp depending on race trim. [ 2 ] The road going homologation version (200 built) produces 180HP. The launch of the more powerful Celica marks the creation of a new T Sport brand for Toyota, reflecting the company’s successful motorsporting heritage in the FIA World Rally Championship, the American ChampCar series, the classic Le Mans 24-Hours race and its forthcoming entry into Formula 1 The T Sport brand will embody this motor sports excellence within the Toyota range - offering higher performance levels, positive handling and suspension characteristics, increased driver involvement and ride comfort, in-line with the T Sport model. The new Toyota Celica T Sport features a sophisticated 1.8 litre engine with Variable Valve Timing and Lift -intelligent (VVTL-i) which combines the benefits of Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) with a two stage Lift change mechanism. The result is a significant boost in maximum power output to 141kW (192 DIN hp) at 7,800rpm and maximum torque to 180Nm at 6,800rpm.The new Toyota Celica T Sport with a close ratio, six-speed manual gearbox, will accelerate to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed, where permitted, of 225km/h. Yet, thanks to VVTL-i and its intelligent engine management, the Celica T Sport is easy to drive - and economical too.The chassis of the Celica T-Sport has been further developed to give high speed stability with the increased power and provide more sports-orientated ride and handling. The Celica T Sport is marked out by its distinctive T Sport badging and 16-inch alloy wheels and tyres.High performance engine
The heart of the Celica T Sport is its high-revving, 1.8-litre, double overhead camshaft engine which combines two advanced Toyota technologies to produce 141kW of power at 7,800rpm. Although the engine is based on the same 1.8-litre VVT-i unit which powers the standard Celica, almost all the parts are newly designed.
The new 1796cc engine, 2ZZ-GE, has a wider bore and shorter stroke (82mm x 85mm, bore and stroke) than before and a higher compression ratio (11.5:1). It also features increased valve diameters for greater air-fuel flow. These measures combine to give more power across the engine speed range and allow the Celica T Sport to rev to a dramatic maximum 8,200rpm. The Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology - a key feature of the Toyota petrol engine range - gives the Celica a wide torque band and, in particular, boosts torque at low to medium engine speeds. This makes the car easier to drive, more economical and means it emits less harmful emissions.Variable Valve Timing Lift-intelligent
The new Variable Valve Timing Lift-intelligent (VVTL-i) technology uses an extra cam on the camshaft to increase the intake and exhaust valve lift at high engine speeds (above 6,200rpm). This increases power output at the top end of the engine range.
The Variable Valve Timing Lift-intelligent works by seamlessly switching cams - low speed to high speed or vice-versa - at exactly the right operating conditions. The two cams are side-by-side on the camshaft and, during low to medium engine speed running, the valves are operated by the low speed cam. The high speed cam is acting on a ’slipper’ which is free to float within the rocker arm and so has no effect on the valve lift.At the right moment, the slipper is locked into place by a hydraulic pin and the high speed cam takes effect, increasing valve lift and allowing the low speed cam to rotate harmlessly until it is required again. These two advanced Toyota technologies combined (VVTL-i) mean the Celica T Sport has high performance, is easy to drive, and is more economical with less harmful emissions than less sophisticated sports coupes.Sports suspension and handling
The development of the Celica T Sport has incorporated further chassis changes to ensure the car lives up to its image and provides the driver involvement demanded by more sports-minded customers. As a result, the Celica T Sport has a stiffer ride and more sporting handling characteristics than the standard Celica. The front suspension MacPherson struts are stiffer with increased damping and lower front bushes have also been stiffened. In the rear, double wishbone suspension, shock absorber damping is increased and bushes are stiffer. Brakes have been uprated to help handle the extra power. The Celica T Sport has 15-inch ventilated disc brakes at the front and 14-inch solid discs at the rear. Anti-lock braking, with electronic brake force distribution, is standard.Close ratio gearbox
The slick, six speed manual transmission from the standard Celica is retained but a new set of close ratios has been developed for the T Sport. These are designed to allow the driver to extracts maximum performance from the car and ensure the engine stays in ’high-lift’ mode during full acceleration.
Distinctive T Sport styling
The new Toyota Celica T Sport will be instantly recognisable with its distinctive T Sport badging, distinctive exterior colour and side rocker mole which is the same colour as the exterior. Two dynamic new exterior colours, grey metallic andblue-black mica colour clear, have been added to the Celica range for the T Sport brand. A new black-blue two-tone interior is also available. Inside the Celica T Sport customers will find the same comfortable and sporty environment as the standard Celica. New instrumentation reflects the higher performance of the T Sport with the rev counter red-lined at 8,200rpm. Improvements across the Celica range include an optional audio system with RDS (Radio Data System) function, a pollen filter on the heating and ventilation system and an enlarged vanity mirror on the sun visor. 1 comment Twitter Facebook Digg StumbleUpon More 1 comments: Toyota Celica T Sport seth mensah (6683) - Posted on 03.24.2008 what is the price of this car?2002 Toyota Celica T Sport Posted on 03.24.2008 *Registration is required to post in this forum User-ID: Still don't have User-ID? register Forgot your password?
