Generally a decent car but don't expect sporty performance ... more Having had this car for almost 4 months I must say that it is a pretty positive experience. The car is solidly built, reliable and generally better quality trim than the previous Corolla. Positive things about this car include surprisingly comfortable seats, easy to drive as expected, good all round view and all round disc brakes. There are some negative points ranging from the annoying to worrying. This is the only car I have driven which has such a sensitive indicator stalk that I often have to keep my hands on it when going around roundabouts or some corners. It doesn't stop indicators being effective but adds an unnecessary dimension to driving the car. Warning noises can be annoying such as when keys are left in the ignition and you want them to be there, seat belt warning for front seat when you are carrying items on it. Being able to turn these off would be nice. Not a lot of leg room in the rear but then I went from an E Class Mercedes to this car so it's not surprising that I think this. I'm more concerned about the front passenger leg room. When sitting in the seat there is no space in front my wife's legs. This creates a risk in an accident of injury. A slight improvement in the design for better clearance would help. Sporty is not something that comes to mind with this car. After 16,000 miles a Toyota tends to improve. When we were test-driving the car (slightly older model), it was good with power-steering, sensitive brakes and air-conditioning respond very fast. But is there a market for a premium supermini outside of cult future classics like the Mini? 1. Looks 8/10 The new, second generation Yaris has a cheeky look which although typically Toyota (the forthcoming Corolla replacement looks very similar) is thoroughly European. A short snout is framed by two doe-eyed headlights, and a small grille. The rear has a hint of the new Vauxhall Corsa but remains the strongest connection with its pretty predecessor. The 15-inch wheels on our T3 test car look too small, and with only the range-topping T Spirit above it, we expected alloys as standard. 2. Looks inside 8/10 Some passengers thought the interior is bland, but all the controls are logically placed, and with the dials in the centrally-mounted instrument cluster, it looks tidy and uncluttered. The digital speedometer and rev counter takes a little getting used to, not least because it looks like its set back further than it actually is, causing slight eye strain. Once this is overcome, it becomes second nature to glance at the bright, clearly lit screen. The swooping lines on the door cards are pleasant, but two interior handles seems like overkill. Frustratingly on a £10,000 car, there’s no lumbar support for the lower back. 3. Practicality 8/10 It might be small, but the Yaris has a tardis effect, and seems enormous from the passenger seat. This is helped by a remarkably light and airy cabin, with lots of glass and minimal clutter on the dashboard. There are no fewer than 12 storage areas accessible for the front seat occupants, including two useful gloveboxes in front of both driver and passenger. The rear seats slide back and forth, providing extra boot space or legroom in the back. With the seats fully back, there is 272 litres of space, rising to a useful 363 litres with them forward (rear legroom is non-existent if you want to max the boot though). Fold the rear seats flat, and there’s up to 1,086 litres of room. The only frustration was with the rear seats back and the false floor in place (it can be removed, or used to hide away rarely-used tools), shopping needs to be put down before space can be made to pack it in. 4. Ride and Handling 8/10 The Yaris is a hoot to drive, providing plenty of wheel on each corner fun (like the original Mini), and we love its ability to sail from one corner to the next without fuss or drama. The ride was good too, particularly around town and only becomes flustered at speed on badly maintained roads. The Yaris can turn around in the smallest of spaces, with a turning circle of just 4.7 metres. 5. Performance 7/10 With a 86bhp, 1.3-litre engine, the Yaris is more nippy than fast, but around town, it’s more than enough. It’ll reach 62mph (100km/h) in 11.5 seconds and hit 106mph flat out, but the fun is to be had stirring the gearbox to get the best from it. 6. Running Costs 7/10 At around 47 miles per gallon of petrol used, the Yaris is a frugal machine. Be gentle with the pedals, and on a clear road it should hit 60mpg without fuss (economy conscious drivers may want to pay a premium for the 1.4 diesel versions, which can manage more than 70 miles per gallon). It just misses out on exemption from the London Congestion Charge, although its Band C emissions rating means it costs £100 a year to tax. This is combined with a gentle depreciation curve and Toyota’s famous build quality to make an excellent long term ownership prospect. Additionally Toyota claims the Yaris has been built to be easy to repair, helping to keep insurance costs down. Service intervals are every 20,000 miles, with just a minor check over in the intervening 10,000 miles. Sadly, the Yaris is expensive compared to its rivals. The range starts at more than £8,000, rising to over £13,250 for the top of the range. 7. Reliability 9/10 Toyota consistently appears in lists of the most reliable cars, and the Yaris is unlikely to be any different. Although it’s an all-new car, its predecessor proved to run and run without any major issues. Update – February 2010 There have been reports of accelerator pedals becoming hard to depress, slow to return and in rare cases getting stuck half-way through their working travel. Toyota says this is rare, and can be caused by the pedals becoming worn. A total of 180,865 Toyotas have been recalled in the UK, with a reinforced pedal taking 30 minutes to fit. 8. Safety 9/10 The Yaris has received a full five star rating for occupant protection in the EuroNCAP crash tests programme. Brake assist, which applies the brakes harder in the event of a skid to maximise the effectiveness of the anti-lock braking system is standard on all models. Most models in the range receive driver and passenger airbags, with a deactivation switch should a child seat be fitted in the passenger side. Our T3 test car (and the T Spirit) is the first supermini to have a driver’s knee airbag, while an energy-absorbing pad has been built into the door, adding to the protection offered by the side and curtain airbags. 9. Equipment 7/10 Our Yaris T3 test car features a high level of standard kit, although it was supplemented with the £295 Protection Pack, which consists of scuff plates on the door sills, mudflaps and mats. At £675, the alloy wheel, chrome tailpipe and roof spoiler-toting Sport Pack looks like good value, and given the choice, we would have chosen it for our test car. The fully-integrated stereo system – complete with steering wheel-mounted controls – plays MP3 and Windows Media files as well as standard CDs. We would have expected more for our £10,000 though. 10. X-Factor 8/10 Reliable, good looking, fun to drive; its hard not to see the appeal in the Yaris. In fact, its one of the best all-rounders on sale today. Also, because it comes on smaller wheels than the other models, it gives better CO2 and fuel consumption figures. Against The T3 model misses a few of the more luxurious toys you get on the pricier models, such as cruise control and Bluetooth. All models come with a continuously variable transmission, too. That doesn't mean all models give you the same CO2 emissions and fuel economy, though. The entry-level T3 comes on 15-inch alloy wheels, and so returns 72.4mpg and emits 89g/km of CO2. The T4 and T Spirit trims come with 17-inch alloys, and that's why they do slightly worse at 70.6mpg and 92g/km, respectively. That's one reason why the T3 is the one to go for – the other is that it's much cheaper than the others, and still comes with all the kit you need. That includes air-conditioning, front and rear electric windows and a head-up display. Across the range, you'll get a warranty that covers the car for an impressive five years/100,000 miles. July 2009 For the past 12 years, Toyota has been refining the Prius – and it clearly didn’t think it was worth tinkering with the styling of the second generation. With its shape honed in the wind tunnel to minimise drag, the new model looks pretty much the same – and very similar to the Insight. The devil is in the detail, though, and it’s here where the Toyota steals a march on its rival. Distinctive headlamps and a sharper overall look give the Prius a more upmarket presence than the Honda. We’re comparing the basic T3 here, but the top-of-the-range T Spirit in our pictures gets smart 17-inch alloys, instead of 15-inch rims, and this takes emissions up to 92g/km; the T3 puts out 89g/km. Climb aboard, and the interior matches the car’s futuristic powerplant. The digital dials are centrally positioned, a head-up windscreen display is standard on all cars and the swooping centre console forms a bridge between the dash and transmission tunnel. High-quality plastics and a simple layout ensure it works well, plus there’s lots of space. A flat floor in the rear gives room for five adults, and there’s a 445-litre boot. It’s not perfect, though – the steering column doesn’t provide sufficient reach adjustment, so tall drivers have to compromise. Once you’ve got comfortable, there’s a foot-operated parking brake and the tiny, clear-blue plastic gearshifter looks like it’s from an arcade game. Press start, select D and release the brake, and the Prius silently edges forward. Hit the Electric Vehicle button and you can drive solely on zero-emissions electric power at up to 31mph for two miles, depending on the charge in the batteries. Accelerate hard and the new 1.8-litre petrol engine kicks in, and in normal driving the electric motor assists the petrol unit rather than replaces it. It uses a CVT gearbox so revs are constant as you accelerate, as in the Honda. But the Toyota feels more grown-up. At the test track, it was faster than the Insight and insulated engine noise better. Ride comfort is much smoother, as the Prius deals with bumps better than its rival. However, the regenerative brakes mean you have to adjust the effort when coming up to junctions – often applying more pressure than expected to come to a halt. Even so, the Prius recorded solid stopping distances at the track. But the transmission’s B mode – which aims to give greater engine braking – made little difference. While the Toyota won’t match traditional family cars for fun, it is better to drive than its rival. This test is all about emissions and economy, though, and figures of 89g/km and 48.7mpg are impressive. In contrast, the Honda delivers 101g/km and 45.1mpg. The question is whether these statistics justify the Toyota’s £2,880 price premium. I bet a lot more than 48 mpg could be achieved. Anyone can rally a car on the track and get poor mpg, but this car is all about regen. I see reviews on the internet where ( Normal) people regularly get over 75 mpg, and some have got over 80+. I'm just waiting for reviews of the Nissan Leaf to come. I bet if you hammer it for a long time around a track, it will no doubt effect it's range! Third generation of the original hybrid family car is on sale in August, complete with a bigger engine than ever before. AT A GLANCE: The need to reduce drag means the Prius has a distinctive wedge-shaped profile. Both cars feature high tail designs, and this results in small upright windows joined to larger, near-horizontal rear windscreens. The spar that separates these two panels obstructs the view out the back, although the thinner design of the Toyota’s moulding provides better visibility. The Prius is now available with the firm’s self-parking technology. It uses a rear camera and extra sensors in the bumper to measure the length of spaces. It can reverse or parallel park for you. All you have to do is control the speed while the steering wheel spins automatically in front of you! It works well, but a competent driver will always be faster.
