It might not outsell the Honda CR-V in the UK or out perform the Freelander off-road or perhaps have the same brand or badge desirability as Land Rover for some customers, but it does have huge appeal as family transport and is highly regarded for its quality, refinement and driving performance on-road, where most SUVs spend their life anyway. The RAV4 has an understated, five-door body and best of all the looks do not scream ‘flashy 4x4 gas-guzzler’ at you. It is longer and wider than previous model, but it is easier to manoeuvre. It is not overly large, just 4,395mm in length, less than Toyota’s Avensis hatchback, 1,815mm wide, and 1,720mm high, so its fits neatly into a normal sized garage and can be negotiated in and out of multi-story car parks easily. It is very user-friendly taking up no more road space than a medium sized family car, so even the infamous anti-social school run, using a 4x4, can be undertaken without feeling guilty. Interior Compact it maybe but the latest RAV4 has improved interior space over previous versions, including 47 per cent more luggage room, 586 to 1469-litres depending on whether the Easy Flat folding rear seats are up or down. The RAV is not space-perfect though. For a six-footer the driver’s area, whilst not cramped, feels crowded, I just felt I needed to get the seat further back an inch or so but the height and reach adjustable steering wheel generally gave a comfortable position. Knee space in the rear is also limited but headroom is good. The rear seating width is good for two adults and perhaps one child. When folded down the rear seats do not lay completely flat but the load area is long and wide. But access is hindered by the side hinged rear door which doesn’t open wide enough. Standard equipment My test model was the near top of the range XT5 2.2 D-4D 140 (134bhp) turbodiesel model with a six-speed manual transmission and priced at £25,845. This is a relatively costly model on the face of it but it is the comprehensive specification which pushes up the price. If you can live without leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a DVD navigation system the new XT-R version with the same engine and priced at £21,425 is the sensible choice. The standard equipment for the XT5 includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, a DVD satellite navigation system with Bluetooth connectivity, front, side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags, cruise control, remote central locking and alarm, remote key fob with smart start and entry system. Also included is climate control air conditioning, electric sunroof, electrically operated windows and door mirrors, front fog lights, alloy wheels and Integrated Active Drive, which means the automatic two or four wheel drive system includes vehicle stability control, traction control and hill start assist. The all-wheel drive system also has a button to engage the four-wheel drive ‘lock’ facility for off-road slippery conditions. The instrumentation, including the on-board information computer read-out, are well positioned and fully visible but the switches and controls in the stylish centre console take a while to work out what does what. They are not very logical to use initially. Overall the interior of the RAV4 is built and equipped to a very high level of quality and specification so no wonder owners love them. Driving The overall quality of ride and driving control are also to be praised. The suspension, although on the firm side, gives a comfortable ride and minimises bodyroll. The vehicle is pretty agile on-road and probably the best in the sector. It is easy to drive around town and remains pleasing and non-tiring to drive on country lanes or motorways. The steering could offer better feedback but it is a minor point. There is some road noise intrusion over rougher road surfaces but I suspect that, and the firm-ish ride has more to do with the bigger road wheels and the wider section tyres.Engines The RAV4 comes with the option of three engine choices, a 2.0-litre VVT-i petrol, 151bhp unit and 2.2-litre D-4D 140 (134bhp) and 180 (174bhp) diesels. By far the most popular and sensible option for most owners is the 140 (134bhp) turbodiesel unit which produces 310Nm of torque from 2,000rpm. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with long-legged fifth and sixth gears, makes this an economical on fuel package. The engine is strong and responsive, if somewhat noisy under acceleration. Top speed is 112mph and 0-62mph is covered in 10.5 seconds. The official average fuel economy is 42.8mpg and my test car returned 39.8mpg overall during two weeks of fairly typical motoring, lanes, main roads, motorways and in-town driving. The CO2 emission are relatively low for a SUV at 173g/km putting it in road tax Band E costing £165 a year. So in the areas of sensible overall size, quality, high equipment levels, driveability, reliability and fuel economy, the latest Toyota RAV4 pleases. Even if it isn’t the number one seller in its sector in the UK, all of the elements listed above make it a highly respected and desirable compact SUV around the world. Customers thinking of buying a mid-sized SUV should give it serious consideration. This made a lot of sense, because it was clear that both were pretending to be what they quite definitely were not - or, to be more charitable, each was letting its potential owners feel that they were buying into the sports car and SUV scenes respectively, even though they did not truly qualify in these categories. The new RAV4, introduced early in 2006, has come a long way from those early days. Despite the presence of four-wheel drive, it's no more of a serious SUV than it ever was (Toyota showed off the original car's off-road ability by inviting journalists to drive it over a field no more treacherous than your front lawn), but it has certainly grown up. As Mike Grundon pointed out in his launch report, the latest RAV4 seems designed to appeal to the same people who would have bought the first-generation car more than a decade ago. There is now no short-wheelbase three-door version, talk of four-wheel drive GTIs has been consigned to history, and there is more emphasis than before on quality and comfort. This comes at a price. The two-litre XT5 tested here, which admittedly comes pretty high up in the range, costs £24,495. The only way to spend more is to go for automatic rather than five-speed manual transmission, or for turbo diesel rather than petrol motivation, or to take the plunge and spend nearly £27,000 on the range-topping 175bhp D-4D T180. The 2.0 VVT-i petrol unit makes the RAV4 about as quick as the normal turbo diesel, and not much slower than the T180, though it's nowhere near as economical as either. On the other hand, it's notably smooth and quiet, which in turn means it's relaxing on a long run. XT5 is the highest trim level, and includes satellite navigation, Bluetooth, connectivity, keyless door-opening and engine-starting, automatic wipers and headlamps, cruise control, heated front seats and electric adjustment of the driver's seat. Posted 07 September 2010 - 08:31 PM Hi all, has anyone had an "Oil Maintenance required now" ( paraphrased ) warning come up on the dash? The car has done just over 20k miles an has had oil changes at 5, 10 and 16k, the last one in April as part of the 2nd ( year ) dealer service. Driving down the A19 yesterday and the warning light came on. Heart attack country this, as the motor is looked after better than the wife! Dealer says the light is connected to the odometer and thinks it needs a 20k service. They have asked me to take it in to them to fix and indicated that it would only take a minute - just a question of pressing buttons/switches in the right order. As it is a 70 mile round trip and I'm up to my kneck in work at the moment I'd be quite happy to turn the thing off myself if I could find out how. Set the multi-information display to TRIP A. Turn the ignition switch off. Press and hold the ODO / TRIP switch, and turn the ignition switch on (IG).
